Bob Cavanagh

I joined Counselling and Psychotherapy Associates as a director at the end of January 2011 after having my own practice in Pipitea St Thorndon for some years.

I am a member of the NZ Association of Counsellors and I specialise in couples counselling, working with 'Emotionally Focused Therapy' that I have been studying and training in and working with over the last three years. I have found this to be far more effective with couples than other problem-solving/communication/conflict resolution/assertiveness approaches I used in the past.

My clients are mostly couples who have somehow become disconnected, often through repeating patterns of bickering, fighting, withdrawing or having just grown apart.

For couples whether married, in civil union or de facto relationships, funding for six sessions is available through the Family Court, and I can advise how to complete a simple Request process for this assistance.

My background includes 15 years in the Catholic Church, and over 20 years in business management and consulting. Since 2004 I have refocussed my work - first towards individual counselling, including workplace EAP support and some coaching, and then to couples' work which I now do almost exclusively.

I completed 11 years of study in the church, including a Masters Degree in Theology in Paris. I have also trained to the level of Master Practitioner in NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and I bring a wide range of other learning, personal development and life experience to my work.

(You can find more detail, including answers to 'frequently asked questions', on my individual website: www.counselling.gen.nz)
